Your Heart

Red handprints, hard and bright,

Against a blue dust wall.

Sandy roads and trodden feet,

Midnight before the ball.

Hellos after good byes have faded,

Punches precursors to hugs,

Boats that float on dry, sand waters,

Stone floors with foot worn rugs.

A man who sits with a toothless grin,

And a hand with teeth far too many.

Stuck together in a dried false smile.

He’ll sell them to you for a penny.

Diamonds in the rough do not shine quite as brightly

As the diamonds we see in the sky,

And diamonds that glow in the blackest black canopy

Pale to the stars in our dreams as we lie.

And a dance danced for one doesn’t light up the world

As a dance danced for no one at all.

Dance for the no one who wishes to see,

And will catch you if you think you might fall.

Hands outstretched but never held close

And hearts that are strung on a sleeve.

Hung out to dry on a sandy, dry day,

Hearts that are stitched in the weave.

Smiles that break hearts carry more weight

Than the smiles that lift hearts above.

Smile doubly as much for the hearts that are broken

For all hearts can be mended by love.

Words spoken loudly are not as important

As the words whispered in the little boy’s ear,

And the words that hurt are not as often remembered

As the words that soothed his fear.

Raindrops that fall on the roofs of the houses

Are not as fun as when they fall on your head,

And going to sleep bored is not nearly as nice

As being tired and worn in your bed.

Dreams are more there when they’re dreamed with eyes open

Than the dreams we dream with them tightly shut.

The dreams that you wake for and live for and laugh,

Feel the tears and the blood in each cut

Life is more worth it when it makes you cry,

Life’s only life when it tears you apart,

But smiles are there from all other people

To pick you up, and sew together your heart.

Find the Beauty

Sometimes I feel trapped

And held too tightly in the hands of time.

Sometimes I feel as though I can’t breathe,

And nothing’s right if I can’t find a rhyme.

And I was just asking a question,

Just wondering you ever feel the same.

I was just thinking about and thinking some more,

If all of us ever get sick of this game.

It’s a little bit like playing a game of cards

With someone who always cheats.

And no matter how hard I try to win as well,

The other player always foils my feats.

The world can look so grey sometimes.

And I’m positive that that’s not just me.

We can’t always see the world in colour,

And I’m certain that’s what we all sometimes see.

But if there are too many days with the grey,

Then we’ll forget how colour can be bright.

We’ll forget that the world can be bright red and gold,

And I really don’t think that that’s right.

Beauty’s a thing of importance,

Even if something isn’t pretty to the eyes.

Beauty is hidden in the reach of a hand,

In a little boy who sees shapes in the skies.

There will always be times when we want to see grey,

And we let it come inside and tear us apart.

It’s okay occasionally to let the grey touch your eyes,

But don’t ever let it into your heart.

I think we need to start looking for beauty,

Because its there, hidden in the folds of grey.

Beauty is something that makes you smile,

Or gives your empty throat words you can say.

So on those days that are too long and dark,

I have a proposition for what we should do.

On those day we’ll sit and you look for beauty in me,

And I’ll find the beauty in you.

Smile for me, darling.

Go out today.

Smile at as many people as you can, and wait for them to smile back.

Because that’s what makes a difference.

The world isn’t always changed by a grand moment or an incredible force.

Sometimes the world can be changed with just a smile.

I like to think of it this way.

When you smile at one person, it makes them smile in return, which will cause another people to catch their grin and smile once more.

Eventually this will build up.

I like to think of it this way.

There is a chance, no matter how small or insignificant it is, that my one smile could spread across the globe.

One smile could spark millions of other.

Do you like to think of it that way?

Do you?

Really?

Oh, I’m so glad.

So, smile for me, darling.

And even though it may take a few days-

I’ll smile back.
